We both spend a lot of time working on our computers and were in need off a desk that had enough room for both of us. The finished product is a seven foot desk. We absolutely love having a desk we can both comfortably work at!
Tool List: Drill and screws, miter saw, and sanding pad.
Material list: 5 – 2″x10″x8′s, 1 – 2×3, 3″ screws, Kreg Bit, steel wool and vinegar solution, tea stain, Danish Oil This project took me an entire afternoon with power tools. It can still be done without power tools, but will take you longer than an afternoon, since there are a lot of cuts to be made.
- The inspiration for the desk was barn wood from my parents barn and two rusty brackets.
- I used new construction lumber for the project, because I want to recreate the look of distressed barn wood.
- I decided to countersink the screws for a handmade look.
- Countersink holes before I filled with a hand-shaved dowel.
- Simply tape the bit so you know when to stop.
- Dowel plug.
- The bracket installed.
- Here is the aging magic! One jar has apple cider vinegar that has a piece of steel wool in it. The other jar is Lipton tea stain. The steel wool needs to soak overnight in the vinegar. For the stain I used eight tea bags.
- Here is the wood ten seconds after I applied the vinegar solution. I was AMAZED at how fast it aged the wood.,
- Once the vinegar solution has dried apply the tea stain to the wood. It will give it a great red tone and further age the wood.
- Another view of the vinegar in action.
- Here you can see a close up of the finish and the hand distressing I did.
- Here is the finished product. I sealed the project with a Danish Oil.
